I think they know that they're lying, they just cannot help that they are. |

I've seen it suggested that some do, but there's some desire to draw a line between actively (but not necessarily wilfully) lying and delusion (that the person actually holds it to be true despite contrary evidence being given/knowingly not having experienced it). It wouldn't really be a compulsion to *lie* if they didn't recognise it to be true/unjustified to begin with, on some level at least.
Of course, it can vary within individuals. Someone could tell the same story for so long that it becomes confused with/replaces the real events, or that they confabulate it to reduce guilt/shame about lying. |

Sometimes. Only if they say the lie a lot do they actually come to believe it- - or so I've heard and witnessed. It's actually happened to me. The mind is a tricky thing. |

I've seen this in action with a couple of liars I know. They convince themselves it's true and go on from there. |

Im sure they know they are making stuff up, they just get so in detail that it seems real to them. |

This is what I've seen with chronic liars, they actually paint a picture that they believe in their minds. It makes them convincing, I suppose that is how some can even fool a lie detector.

Some insane people do. But most people are aware of the lies they spew. |
