I've seen it suggested that some do, but there's some desire to draw a line between actively (but not necessarily wilfully) lying and delusion (that the person actually holds it to be true despite contrary evidence being given/knowingly not having experienced it). It wouldn't really be a compulsion to *lie* if they didn't recognise it to be true/unjustified to begin with, on some level at least.

Of course, it can vary within individuals. Someone could tell the same story for so long that it becomes confused with/replaces the real events, or that they confabulate it to reduce guilt/shame about lying.

Sometimes. Only if they say the lie a lot do they actually come to believe it- - or so I've heard and witnessed. It's actually happened to me. The mind is a tricky thing.

I've seen this in action with a couple of liars I know. They convince themselves it's true and go on from there.

Im sure they know they are making stuff up, they just get so in detail that it seems real to them.

This is what I've seen with chronic liars, they actually paint a picture that they believe in their minds. It makes them convincing, I suppose that is how some can even fool a lie detector.
